hosted by Peace Week 2009

“Sari Soldiers” Film Screening and talk followed by a Q&A by

discussion on “human rights issues during conflicts” after the Q&A. SC -
LPAC Cinema 7:30 pm

- Julie Bridgham – US/Nepal – 2008 – 90 min
Filmed over three years during the most historic and pivotal time in
Nepal’s modern history, The Sari Soldiers is an extraordinary story of six
women’s courageous efforts to shape Nepal’s future in the midst of an
escalating civil war against Maoist insurgents, and the King’s crackdown
on civil liberties. When Devi, mother of a 15-year-old girl, witnesses her
niece being tortured and murdered by the Royal Nepal Army, she speaks
publicly about the atrocity. The army abducts her daughter in retaliation,
and Devi embarks on a three-year struggle to uncover her daughter’s fate
and see justice done. The Sari Soldiers follows her and five other brave
women, including a Maoist Commander, Royal Nepal Army Officer; a
monarchist from a rural community who leads a rebellion against the
Maoists; a human rights lawyer; and a young student activist organizing
the protests to establish democracy. The Sari Soldiers intimately delves
into the extraordinary journey of these women on all sides of the
conflict, through the democratic revolution that reshapes the country’s
future.

2. Want to Try Stand-Up Comedy?

Think you might be able to perform stand-up? Then you probably can! Hopefully…

In any case, Spike is willing to give you the opportunity! If you’d like to perform stand-up at our Comedy Jam on Thursday April 23rd at 7PM in Olde Club, just send an email to spikemagazine@gmail.com ASAP, but definitely by the end of the day this Sunday, to let us know you’re in!

Then just come, have 5–7 minutes prepared, and bask in stand-up comedy glory…or something like that. No auditions or censorship or anything like that. Just no holds barred comedy. We love to have new people, so if you’ve never done stand-up before but like trying new ridiculous things, give it a shot!

Love an Admit; Get a Kiss!

The Admissions Office invites you to share your springtime loving with our newly admitted students! As we prepare for Ride the Tide, we want to make sure that each one of the admitted students feels a little bit of that magic Swarthmore spirit.

Phon-a-thons are tonight and tomorrow night, 6–8pm in the Admissions Office. Come by and place a call or two; let them know they’re wanted.

Intimidated by the phone? Pick up a pen and write out a congratulatory haiku! The Postcard-A-Thon will run Wednesday through Friday in the Shane Lounge.
