11. Sonya Clark Lecture & List Gallery Reception Thursday, March 5
The List Gallery Presents
the 2009 Donald Jay Gordon Exhibition:
SONYA CLARK Combs: Pieces and Parts
Sonya Clark’s List Gallery exhibition will take place March 5—April 5, 2009. The artist will lecture about her work on Thursday, March 5, 4:30 p.m. in the Lang Performing Arts Center. The List Gallery reception will follow: 5:30—7:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
Sonya Clark listens to the stories held in objects and, lately, unbreakable, fine-toothed, pocket combs have her ear. Each turn in plot, brings questions and an urge to respond with a piece. As cultural critic, Bill Gaskins, said in a review of her work, “Hairdressing is the primordial fiber art.” And so it is that the reed on a loom and the pocket comb are siblings. Clark uses combs the way a weaver manipulates threads in a tapestry: multiplicity in service of the whole. There is a resonance between an artwork made of combs, a hairstyle piled high, and a woven cloth.
Clark is Professor and Chair of Craft /Material Studies in the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Previously, she was the Baldwin-Bascom Professor of Creative Arts at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She received an M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art, a B.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago, and a B.A. from Amherst College. Her honors include a Pollock-Krasner Award and a Rockefeller Residency.
Her work has been exhibited in over 150 venues in the United Kingdom, Brazil, South Africa, Canada, Taiwan, Austria, Australia, France, Switzerland, and the United States. Recent solo exhibitions include Loose Strands, Tight Knots at the Walters Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD; Groom Room at Delaware Contemporary Art Center, Wilmington, DE; and Tangles and Teeth at Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI. Her work has also been acquired by distinguished collections including the Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI, the Hampton Museum, Hampton, VA, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Madison, WI, Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts, Canada, and the Musee d’Angers, France.
This exhibition and lecture are made possible by the Donald Jay Gordon Visiting Artist Fund. More information and images can be viewed at http://www.sonyaclark.com/
