7. Cracking Closed Doors: The Media in Sudan
This Sunday, May 3 at 3:30 pm in Kohlberg 116, the Darfur Radio Project will host a lecture by Leon Willems. Mr. Willems is the director of Press Now, an NGO that supports independent media in conflict zones and areas of transitional government.
In December of 2008, through his work with Press Now, Mr. Willems helped to launch Radio Dabanga, a daily radio news show broadcast into and around Darfur. The program aims to provide Darfuris with information about safety, health, national politics, and other crucial issues that would otherwise be largely inaccessible to them.
Mr. Willems’ talk, Cracking Closed Doors—The Media in Sudan, will explore issues of press freedom in present-day Sudan. Mr. Willems will discuss the challenges that journalists in Sudan and other conflict zones face. He will also discuss his experiences working to establish alternative media outlets as one potential solution to these difficulties.
Co-hosted by: War News Radio, Swat STAND, SASA, the Departments of History and Sociology/Anthropology.

9. host a student from Spain this summer
A friend of mine who lives in Sevilla, Spain, will be visiting the United States this July. He’d like to visit a couple of cities around the country, maybe for a week or two in each location. He is fluent in both English and Spanish, and currently in college. If you’d like to spend a week or two this summer introducing a good looking (and, I believe, highly eligible bachelor) European to your part of the country, here’s your opportunity! Email me if you’re interested.
