THE FIRST RACKETLON TOURNAMENT
at Lamb-Miller Fieldhouse/ Swarthmore College

Date: Sunday, May 3, 2009
Time: 10:00 a.m.

Racketlon is a sport in which you challenge your opponent in each of the four racket sports: table tennis, squash, badminton, and tennis. A racketlon match contains four sets, one in each sport. Eash set is played to 21 points. The total winner of a racketlon match is not the one that wins most sets but the one that scores the most points in total, The winner is the best all around racket player.

You do NOT need experience in all the racket sports. There will be someone to help out with the rules if needed. Generally, a good racketlon player is someone who has some experience in 2 of the racket sports, but that is not a pre-requisite to participate. Equipment will be available to borrow at the tournament site.

This event is FREE to the tri-college community (Swarthmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr) faculty/staff/students

There will be singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events. You can enter in as many events as you wish.

THE HAY-URBAN PRIZE FOR A SUMMER INTERNSHIP, STUDY, OR RESEARCH IN RELIGION

With a generous gift from Stephen Hay ‘51 and funds given in honor of P. Linwood Urban’s retirement from the College in 1989, the Department of Religion will again offer the Hay-Urban prize of $1,000 to assist in supporting at least one student internship, summer study, or research in the area of religion studies.

Your application should consist of a two-page narrative description of your project and its relationship to your studies at the College, a one-page budget proposal, a recommendation letter on your behalf, and a transcript.

Kay Chornook was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1958. She loves the natural world, and was introduced to the lakes, rocks and forests of the North through a childhood spent hiking and camping across Canada. As a teenager, Kay went to live and work in the bush of northern Manitoba and Quebec before returning to the University of Guelph where she studied Horticulture. In the 1990s and 2000s Kay went to Monteverde, Costa Rica, to work as a volunteer with the Monteverde Conservation League. In Monteverde, she went on hikes with Wolf Guindon, a founding member of the Quaker community in Costa Rica and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

Sign up to participate in a community mural project in South Philadelphia on Saturday, April 25th! Saturdays of Service will be helping to paint an inspiring outdoor mural based on the theme of “second chances.” The project is being organized by the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, the City of Philadelphia Office of Behavioral Health, Citizens Acting Together Can Help (CATCH), and various groups from UPenn and West Philadelphia High School.

The day should be festive and sunny! A great way to interact with the local community. We’ll be leaving from Parrish Circle at noon and returning around 4:00 (or perhaps earlier). Email rjudson1 to sign up now! Space is limited!

War News Radio, the Darfur Radio Project, and the Swarthmore Migration Project are looking for a student who can provide occasional technical assistance in keeping our shared studio up and running over the next school year. The ideal candidate would:

• know (or be somewhat familiar with) PHP, Linux, and MySQL
• know advanced-intermediate Mac OS X administration and system configuration
• be familiar with how websites work (i.e. DNS, domain registration, Apache webserver (very very basic familiarity))
• be familiar with how RSS works
• be good at troubleshooting an admittedly wonky local network setup (i.e. Lodge 6)
• be friendly and reliable!

Are you interested in social justice? Come talk about the ways that our different groups and projects are connected, diverge and overlap! We can’t all be in every group that we might want to, but that doesn’t mean we don’t care and can’t support each other. The idea behind a social justice night is to bring us all together and let each other know what we have been up to all year. Each group can give a short (~10 min) presentation on who you are, what you do, how you do it, what your recent projects have been and what obstacles you have faced. Besides updating each other the idea is also to hang out, strategize, scheme, talk to each other and meet new people. There will be music (not the usual paces jams), some jugged wine and lots of snacks.

PHIL 50 JUSTICE: From Theory to Practice
Mondays 1:15pm-4:00pm

What is justice? To whom does it extend? What does justice require us to do? This course will have two essential components: a philosophical component and a service learning component. We will discuss what justice is, what it requires of us, to whom it extends, and why. Our readings will be drawn from, but not limited to, Rawls, Dworkin, Cohen, and Singer. In addition, you will be required to go outside of the classroom to learn how concerns for social justice are shaping our community. You will be expected to integrate both aspects of this course in class discussion and in your written work.

Requires Intro level Prerequisite. Limited to 12 students.

Volunteer at the first College Access Center in Delaware County providing
free services to students and families.

The newly opened College Access Center is situated on the Widener campus
in Chester, PA. The center provides direct free services and access to
information for those interested in college prep and planning. The space
serves as a gathering place for many other workshops and learning for the
community of Delaware County.

We are looking for students who are interested in mentoring, tutoring,
community outreach, SAT tutoring, Office/Center Assistance, language
translating and more! If you have skills that you could share or if you
are part of a group that would like to contribute—no time is too little
and all skills are welcome.

The center, the first initiative of the Chester Higher Education Council,
provides everything from college and career awareness and study skills
development to tutoring, mentoring, and assisting high school seniors and
their parents with the college planning and preparation process.
