2. Volunteer at a Community Paint Day with Saturdays of Service!
Sign up to participate in a community mural project in South Philadelphia on Saturday, April 25th! Saturdays of Service will be helping to paint an inspiring outdoor mural based on the theme of “second chances.” The project is being organized by the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, the City of Philadelphia Office of Behavioral Health, Citizens Acting Together Can Help (CATCH), and various groups from UPenn and West Philadelphia High School.
The day should be festive and sunny! A great way to interact with the local community. We’ll be leaving from Parrish Circle at noon and returning around 4:00 (or perhaps earlier). Email rjudson1 to sign up now! Space is limited!

4. Got tech skills? Lend a hand to student radio projects!
War News Radio, the Darfur Radio Project, and the Swarthmore Migration Project are looking for a student who can provide occasional technical assistance in keeping our shared studio up and running over the next school year. The ideal candidate would:
- know (or be somewhat familiar with) PHP, Linux, and MySQL
- know advanced-intermediate Mac OS X administration and system configuration
- be familiar with how websites work (i.e. DNS, domain registration, Apache webserver (very very basic familiarity))
- be familiar with how RSS works
- be good at troubleshooting an admittedly wonky local network setup (i.e. Lodge 6)
- be friendly and reliable!
If you think you might be interested (even if you don’t have all the skills listed above), please drop me a line (jengebr1@swarthmore.edu). We’ll be more than happy to train you!

6. Social Justice Night @ Paces
Are you interested in social justice? Come talk about the ways that our different groups and projects are connected, diverge and overlap! We can’t all be in every group that we might want to, but that doesn’t mean we don’t care and can’t support each other. The idea behind a social justice night is to bring us all together and let each other know what we have been up to all year. Each group can give a short (~10 min) presentation on who you are, what you do, how you do it, what your recent projects have been and what obstacles you have faced. Besides updating each other the idea is also to hang out, strategize, scheme, talk to each other and meet new people. There will be music (not the usual paces jams), some jugged wine and lots of snacks.
When? 7:00pm, April 24th
Where? Paces
If your group wants to send someone or a few people to come speak please email Hansi (hwang1), Elise (egarrit1) or Dermot (ddelude1) to give us a heads up. Other than that please bring yourself and forward this email to other groups you’re in. All are welcome, spread the word!

18. Apply to be an ASAP facilitator
Acquaintance Sexual Assault Prevention (ASAP) is now accepting applications for students interested in facilitating workshops during Orientation Week 2009 (August 24–30).
Recognizing that sexual assault can happen on campus is the first step to increasing overall awareness and fostering a safer environment. In the past few years, the Swarthmore community has worked to raise awareness of issues of sexual violence, with initiatives including the Clothesline Project, the Handprint Project, the SMART Team, and ASAP. The ASAP program plays a crucial role in the development of new students’ attitudes towards sexual assault and increasing awareness.
ASAP workshops are held at the end of the orientation period (Aug. 28–30) and are designed to introduce new students to the issue of sexual assault, prevention tips, and the resources available at Swarthmore for sexual assault prevention. The workshops aim to create an awareness of acquaintance sexual assault and provide a comfortable atmosphere for dialogue about sexual consent.
If you are interested in facilitating and will be returning to campus for the fall semester, please apply with the application below! No experience in facilitation, sexual assault prevention, or health education is necessary. Facilitators work in pairs and arrive the day before the new students for training beginning August 24, 2009. All are encouraged to apply, including RAs, CAs, athletes, and other workshop/orientation participants. We will work with the OC to avoid scheduling conflicts.
Anne Miller ’10 [amiller2] or Will Hopkins ’11 [whopkin1] with any questions.

5. For Fall 2008, will you be a CA or an RA, be back early to play a varsity sport, or be back early for any other reason? (This does not preclude your participation as a facilitator).
