Interested in making a short film and earning some money? Swarthmore TOPSoccer is looking for you!

We are looking for a student with experience in making short films to create our Swarthmore TOPSoccer 2008–2009 film. Swarthmore TOPSoccer is a student-run, community-based program for young athletes with special needs. At the end of every season, we compile a short, 8–10 minute film for our volunteers and athletes. It’s always been a great hit and we hope to produce yet another fantastic film this year! So, if you’re still interested, read on!

We are looking to create a Swarthmore TOPSoccer DVD, with two sections: a slideshow of pictures and a film. For the slideshow, we will provide you with photos and music. For the film, we need an 8–10 minute film, set to music, comprised of footage shot from our actual sessions. We provide the footage and music, unless you wish to come to a few sessions and film for yourself. I have all former films on file to give you some idea of what we’re looking for.

We would need this to be completed by April 25th. We understand it’s short notice, so we’re willing and able to pay you somewhere between 50 – 75 dollars. If you are interested, please email me PRONTO at Rchano1@swarthmore.edu.

The Swarthmore College Department of Theater’s Production Ensemble presents William Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 at 8 pm and Sunday, March 29 at 2 pm in the Frear Ensemble Theater, Lang Performing Arts Center (LPAC). A cast of fifteen offer a fresh telling of Shakespeare’s epic tale of one man’s journey through the exotic islands and ancient cities of a mythic Mediterranean.

As Pericles, and then his daughter, quest to find what’s been lost, they come across pirates and prostitutes, corrupt Kings and licentious Governors, victims of incest and priestesses of the moon, evil stepmothers and amorous lovers—all coming together to create an adventurous and fantastic tale of transformation and redemption.

Guest artist Eleanor Holdridge directs with Christopher Compton ’09 assistant directing. Pericles features new music composed by Christopher Colucci; set and costume design by Laila Swanson; sound design by Louis Jargow ’10; and lighting design by Kim Comer ‘09.

Drama Board is getting ready to hold auditions for this semester’s One Act Play Festival!!!

A locally-based production team will visit campus on Thurs., Mar. 26 (rain date 3/27), to film a public service announcement for the American Diabetes Association. The crew will film scenes (without sound) in the Field House as well as in the Fragrance Garden and on a path near Wharton and the tennis courts.

We are working closely with this production team to minimize their impact on campus. Parking spaces near the Field House and behind Clothier will be reserved for the crew’s vehicles, but otherwise life on campus should be uninterrupted.

Many thanks to everyone in Athletics, Facilities, the Scott Arboretum, and Dining Services for helping with these arrangements, and to everyone on campus in advance for your help in accommodating these visitors.

The Jesse H. Holmes Prize in Religion of $l50, a gift of the late Eleanor S. Clarke of the Class of 1918 and named in honor of Jesse Holmes, Professor of History of Religion and Philosophy at Swarthmore College from 1899 to 1934, is awarded annually to the student who submits the best essay in a competition judged by the Department of Religion. All Swarthmore College students are eligible to compete, and the essays may be on any topic in the field of religion. The deadline for submission of papers this year is Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Papers must be typewritten, double-spaced, and should be very carefully proofread. Students may wish to consult a Department paper, “Guidelines for Papers and Term Essays,” available in the Department office, Pearson 211. Papers should normally be between 15 and 30 pages of text. Papers are to be submitted to the Department office. The author should not include his/her name on the paper but should sign it with a pseudonym. The author’s name and pseudonym should be put in a sealed envelope submitted with the paper.

THE HAY-URBAN PRIZE FOR A SUMMER INTERNSHIP, STUDY, OR RESEARCH IN RELIGION

With a generous gift from Stephen Hay ‘51 and funds given in honor of P. Linwood Urban’s retirement from the College in 1989, the Department of Religion will again offer the Hay-Urban prize of $1,000 to assist in supporting at least one student internship, summer study, or research in the area of religion studies.

Your application should consist of a two-page narrative description of your project and its relationship to your studies at the College, a one-page budget proposal, a recommendation letter on your behalf, and a transcript.

It is that time of year again! The Photo Club is running a student photography show during
Family Weekend and we are accepting submissions now!

Submission guidelines are simple: Send full-size photographs of any subject to Steve Dean [sdean1@swarthmore.edu] by Friday, April 3rd.

If you want to submit film photographs, please send either Steve Dean or Miles Skorpen a copy via the Mail Room or hand it off to either of us in person.

After we receive submissions, we’ll select a limited number of
photographs, and then matte them all (and, if funds allow, even frame
a few). There is no limit to the number of photographs you can submit.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics gives one or more awards each year for the best essay on a mathematical topic written by a Swarthmore student or students. The prize is $200 per winning paper, and winners have their names engraved on the Brinkmann Prize Plaque and are asked to give a lecture on their work. (This lecture can be given in the fall, if desired.) This prize honors Heinrich W. Brinkmann, who taught at Swarthmore from 1933 to 1969.

Any mathematics paper is eligible, including papers written for summer research projects, senior conference, and W courses – so long as every author is a Swarthmore student. However, Brinkmann papers should be aimed at a general mathematical audience, who may know nothing about your special topic and for whom clarity and readability are key. Papers written for research groups or advanced courses often assume familiarity with special material. In order to be strong candidates for the Brinkmann Prize, such papers should be revised before submission.

Papers should be submitted to the chair, Professor Stephen B Maurer, by 5pm on Monday, April 27, 2009. For further information, please contact Prof Maurer (smaurer1, SC 139).

Global Health Forum, in partnership with SolesUnited and Crocs, Inc., is collecting Crocs and sending them to people living in Pémon, Venezuela in order to improve their health and quality of life.

So how do Crocs help improve people’s lives?
—Basic footwear improves hygiene and lowers rates of infections transmitted through barefeet, like tungiasis. These infections can greatly increase the risk of secondary infections, like tetanus, which can be lethal.

These infections are completely preventable—Please donate any available Crocs to be recycled and redistributed—collection begins after Spring Break!

Students interested in the Buenos Aires Program for Fall 09 should contact Professor Diego Armus, darmus1@swarthmore.edu as soon as possible. There are still few available places. Swarthmore in Buenos Aires provides individually-crafted programs of study with total immersion in the academic, artistic, social and political life of Buenos Aires. It aims at serving students in social sciences, the humanities, and applied sciences interested in taking their Spanish to an advanced level of fluency, as well as those at beginner or intermediate levels. But along with its language improvement component students participating in the Swarthmore in Buenos Aires program will organize their work around three or more areas of interest (in any field or discipline) that may include directed reading on a chosen subject, a research project, community work, an internship in a lab or in a cultural institution. They will participate in individual weekly discussion meetings with their mentors – university professors, artists or researchers – as well as in open courses at several public and private universities. Academic oriented traveling (from Patagonia to Iguazu Falls to areas of the Argentine interior with a strong native American presence) could be part of the program’s offerings. Students may enroll for one semester or the full year.
