1. Sustainability at Swarthmore
Dear Friends,
Sustainability begins at home and most of us are living a good
portion of our lives right here on this campus – so by some definition
this is home too. The Sustainability Committee has been active since
its formation last Fall and has a new website with recommendations for a
more environmentally-sustainable campus home:
http://www.swarthmore.edu/x21356.xml
As an added consideration in this context, we would also like to point
out that conserving resources often also helps save money. With
million-dollar annual electricity bills, and in the current financial
climate, the College must rely even more upon its community members to
do all we can to help keep Swarthmore moving forward. As you know we
welcome not only your greater attention to this matter and your greater,
more conscious effort to be an active environmental citizen, but also
your ideas for making all of our efforts more effective. To that end,
when you visit the Committee’s website, notice and use if you can, the
GreenBox to offer your suggestions.
Yours for a greener future,
Maurice
—Maurice G. Eldridge ‘61 Vice President and Executive Assistant to the President

10. Looking for female volunteers willing to talk about their experiences studying the natural sciences
Expanding Your Horizons is a one-day conference intended to introduce middle school girls to fields in which women are traditionally underrepresented and to provide their parents with information on how best to support their daughters. We are currently seeking students to conduct a Q&A with the parents—this would include discussing your academic background, your high school/college prep experiences, challenges you’ve faced, and the kinds of support you received from parents and teachers.
The conference will take place in the Science Center on Saturday, March 21 from 8am to 3pm. The student Q&A will occur in the afternoon and will probably last about 40 minutes. Email Lbackup1 or Jtrinh1 for more information.
