Expanding Your Horizons is a one-day conference intended to introduce middle school girls to fields in which women are traditionally underrepresented and to provide their parents with information on how best to support their daughters. We are currently seeking students to conduct a Q&A with the parents—this would include discussing your academic background, your high school/college prep experiences, challenges you’ve faced, and the kinds of support you received from parents and teachers.

The conference will take place in the Science Center on Saturday, March 21 from 8am to 3pm. The student Q&A will occur in the afternoon and will probably last about 40 minutes. Email Lbackup1 or Jtrinh1 for more information.

Interested in learning more about the politics of Chester, Pennsylvania while working on an exciting documentary film project? A group of students are producing a documentary on the history of environmental and political disenfranchisement in Chester, the current state of development projects on Chester’s riverfront, and the vision for Chester’s future. We are currently regrouping for the spring semester and looking for energetic and committed volunteers to help with collecting footage, conducting interviews, and video production. Volunteers with The Village Education Project will teach Math and English
at a rigorous summer program for underprivileged children in
the rural villages surrounding Otavalo, Ecuador. The program will prepare the students to attend high school, which The Village Education Project fully funds for students who participate in the summer program. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to work with children of all age groups, and to branch out of
the three core subjects to teach sports, music, art and other subjects. The program for volunteers includes both pre-departure and on-site training. Outside of working hours, volunteers in the past have taken salsa lessons, traveled to the nearby cloud forest, climbed volcanoes, visited the rain-forest, and goneon numerous hikes through the Andes mountains.

Summer 2009 Program Overview

Eligibility Village Education Project volunteers must meet the following requirements:

1. 18 years of age or older
   # High school diploma or GED equivalent
   # Evident leadership, initiative, and personal responsibility

The following characteristics are preferred but not required:

1. At least basic proficiency in reading, writing and speaking Spanish
   # Teaching experience

Program Dates Summer 2009 program dates are June 20, 2009-August 21, 2009

Arrival Volunteers must arrive in Otavalo on one of four determined start dates. A certain amount of flexibility can be made to accommodate for cheaper airfare prices during the week, but volunteers who arrive early must arrange for their own accommodations* and plan to meet with the VEP Program Coordinator on a determined start date. Start dates for Summer 2009 include: June 20th, July 4th, and July 18t. and August 1s

NOTE: Volunteers that DO NOT speak Spanish MUST start the program on June 20th for intensive Spanish classes.

Duration The program is broken down into three stages, in which volunteers take on different responsibilities both in and out of the classroom:

1. June 20th – July 5th : Volunteers will prepare for summer classes, design teaching materials, and develop students’ coursework. Volunteers with weak Spanish will take daily Spanish lessons.
   # July 7th – August 7th : Volunteers work with 7th graders to prepare them for high school in daily Math and English classes.
   # August 10th – August 21st : Volunteers work with high school students in review sessions, and to prepare them for the next grade level.

Because of the importance of consistency in education, volunteers are required to stay for a minimum of three weeks, but are encouraged to stay four weeks or longer.

Costs Costs for Summer 2009 include the following:

1. $500 Program Fee
   # $150/week for food, housing and transportation, payable upon arrival in Ecuador
   # Plane fare; travel arrangements and payments must be made individual by each volunteer

Unfortunately, The Village Education Project is unable to provide financial aid for volunteers. However, we will do our best to support fundraising efforts undertaken by volunteers to cover costs. Now in its fifth year, the Program’s fundamental objective is to advance the academic,
inter-personal, social, and professional success of Swarthmore College students who
are from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or first generation students attending
college. The Program is open to currently enrolled freshmen, sophomores, and
juniors. Students selected for the Program will have a campus mentor – faculty or
staff – to guide them during their time at the college and after working with their campus
mentor for one year (sophomore year), they will be eligible to apply for a 4–6 week
summer internship and placed with alumni or friends of the college in their field
of interest.

Students will be considered for the Rubin Scholar Mentoring Program through two
routes: they can be nominated by a faculty or staff member with whom they already
have a mentoring relationship, or they can self-nominate and ask a faculty/staff member
to sponsor them, and become their campus mentor.
