On Sunday, February 15th, Saturdays of Service will be participating in a
food distribution day with the Jewish Relief Agency, an organization
committed to combating hunger in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Not only
will we join other volunteers in helping to package and load food
shipments, but we will also be hand delivering them to families in need.
This is a great opportunity to get off campus and engage face-to-face with
the local community!

Many of you are probably thinking about plans for the summer. Maybe you’re buying plane tickets home! While you’re figuring out your plans, remember Trash 2 Treasure!

Trash 2 Treasure is a large student-volunteer effort to collect and re-sell abandoned and donated student goods at the end of the year. We (a) generate thousands of dollars for charity ($14,000 last year), (b) provide low-cost goods for community members, and© reduce waste by giving homes to what would otherwise be discarded.

We will be looking for approximately 25 volunteers to stay on-campus until June 14th. More information will follow as the end of the semester approaches. Right now we’re just getting the word out!

Interested in doing volunteer work in China this summer?

Global Neighbours (GN), a new group on campus as of Fall 2008, seeks to improve the living conditions and social status of those marginalized due to medical conditions in international settings. This past winter, two GN members traveled to China to assess the needs of a Hansen’s Disease (HD) recovery village in the Hunan Province. Since their return, GN has been organizing a trip for volunteers to return to this HD village this upcoming summer. The trip would take place over three weeks in August, and will hopefully mark a significant improvement in the lives of those living in the village.

The PA department of health released a health advisory regarding a gastrointestinal virus called norovirus. People living in communal settings such as colleges are reminded to wash their hands frequently. Hand washing is the best defense against the spread of the norovirus. Anyone with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea should report to health services for care.

students—U.S. citizens, permanent residents, AND foreign nationals. The
tax guide, available mid-February, provides straightforward information
about how to complete your 2008 federal income tax return. Tax guides

Help start up the first College Access Center providing free services to students and adults in Chester!

Cynthia Jetter (director of community partnerships at Swarthmore’s Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility) joined forces with several colleges and universities in the area to open the new College Access Center in Chester, PA. The three-story center is space that provides direct free services and access to information for under served students and adults interested in college prep and planning. The space will also serve as a gathering place for many other creative activities and learning for the community of Delaware County.

We are looking for people who are interested in mentoring, tutoring, community outreach, SAT tutoring, administrative assistance, language translating and more! If you have skills you could share or if are you part of a group that would like to contribute—no time is too little and all skills are welcome.

We’re looking for an additional actor to join the cast of Reginald Rose’s 12 Angry Men. The role, that of the 7th juror, possesses a easy, superficial charm concealing an overbearing and impatient nature. The role gives an actor a lot to play with and he or she will be joining a truly remarkable cast.

My Right Self is a photography exhibit that includes stories and photographs from five individuals or couples who identify as trans or gender-variant. The five participants span much of the diversity within the trans community/ies; transitioning from lesbian to male, heterosexual female to gay male, from male to lesbian, male to heterosexual female, and female to genderqueer. My Right Self includes text from the writings of the participants who have been given time to reflect upon and describe how their identities are related to their bodies, their sex, their gender, their sexuality, and further, how their relationships with others and society reflect back how they are perceived in the world and exist in the eyes of others.

Trans issues and rights are particularly relevant to contemporary questions of social justice and human rights as they inherently invoke conversations on sex, gender, sexuality, behavior, and sociopolitical hierarchies of power which affect all aspects of society. Sitting at the cusp of liberation and hostility, trans issues reveal more fundamental fault lines in American society that undermine minority rights and control of the body, especially with regard to women and children.

These images (and accompanying text) are meant to confront and dispel myths and misperceptions around marginalized and disenfranchised communities. The work is not meant to fall into stereotyped patterns of portrayal, however neither is it meant to be neutered. The images should give viewers permission to stare – as one cannot do kindly in public. However within their gaze, the artist hopes viewers find something more akin to the familiarity of the Self rather than the fetish of the Other.

The artist, Arthur Robinson Williams, studied photography for four years with Emmet Gowin, Lois Conner, and Mary Berridge. He has completed photography projects involving AIDS and the people of Ghana, the health system of Cuba, homosexuality in the Netherlands, anthroposophical farming communities in the Northeast, injection drug use in New Jersey, and drugs and addiction nationwide.

The Swarthmore Martial Arts Club is now offering free classes in the empty-handed Korean art of Taekwondo for Swarthmore students. Interested in learning more about the politics of Chester, Pennsylvania while working on an exciting documentary film project? A group of students are producing a documentary on the history of environmental and political disenfranchisement in Chester, the current state of development projects on Chester’s riverfront, and the vision for Chester’s future.
