Applications for the Richard Rubin Scholar Mentoring Program are now available. In its fifth year, the Program’s fundamental objective is to advance the academic, inter—personal, social, and professional success of
Swarthmore College students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or first generation students attending college. The Program is open to currently enrolled freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.

Students selected for the Program will have a campus mentor – faculty or staff – to guide them during their time at Swarthmore; and after working with their campus mentor for one year (sophomore year), they will be eligible to apply for a 4–6 week paid summer internship with alumni or friends of the college in a field of their interest.
Students can be nominated by a faculty or staff person, or self-nominate and ask a faculty/staff member to sponsor them, and become their campus mentor.

There will be no 4 – 6PM open swim sessions until after varsity swim season ends – late February/early March. No Saturday afternoon swim sessions when home swim meets are scheduled (1/24 & 2/7).

Learning for Life is a program that pairs current Swarthmore students with staff members (typically from Dining Services, Environmental Services, Facilities, and Public Safety) in learning partnerships. Partners work toward their personal learning goals—anything from cooking to computers to photography to physical fitness. L4L is emphatically not a tutoring program; the exchange that happens in partnerships is bidirectional. Students and staff learn from one another doing fun activities that interest them, and often develop close friendships.

In the past, partnerships have

- Made a movie using the equipment from the LRC
– Worked together to publish a book of poetry
– Hosted a radio show together
– Worked on computer skills such as typing, designing webpages, and doing taxes online
– Learning American Sign Language
– Designed and printed their own t-shirts
– Worked out together at the gym, pool, and tennis courts
– Researched sumo wrestling and made an informational presentation
– Studied driver’s education
– and much more

The time commitment is small (most partnerships meet for 1–3 hours per week) and the hours are FLEXIBLE. We pair you up based on when you are free!

What better way to combat the winter blues than to start planning for summer?

Grants from a variety of college-administered sources are available to support research—both on- and off-campus—by students in the sciences (biology, chemistry/biochemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics/astronomy, psychology), and all continuing students are eligible to apply for this research support!

Application procedures for funding summer research are now posted on the web at
http://www.swarthmore.edu/x8586.xml, where you can also find a link to an application form. All students, whether or not they are doing research on campus, will need an on-campus faculty sponsor for their project. You should find, and have approval from, your faculty sponsor BEFORE the February 12 deadline below so that your sponsor has adequate time to fill out her/his part of the proposal.

Please note the following important due dates. For most of the funds, including HHMI fellowships: students must turn in an application to their faculty sponsor by February 12; faculty sponsors must then complete the application and forward it to Julie MacMullan by noon on February 17. Applications for a few of the funds are due to Rose Maio by February 23. The application has parts for which the student is responsible and parts for which the faculty member is responsible. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered for funding. Students will be notified of funding decisions before Spring Break.

Please note that each student – regardless of the funding source – is required to turn in a brief summary of his/her research at the end of the summer. This summary may be read by people who are not scientists and will therefore need to be written for such an audience.

The MLL Language tables start the week of 1/26/09. Arabic meets in Room 6 on Thursdays at 6:00 PM. Chinese meet on Monday in room 6 at 12:30 PM and on Friday in room 5 at 12:30. French meet on Wednesday in room 6 at 5:30 PM. German meet on Friday in room 4 at 12:00 noon. Japanese meet on Monday in room 4 at 12:15 PM. Russian meet on Thursday in room 6 at 12:30. Interested in choreographing for and/or performing in a fun, low-stress environment? Terpsichore is a dance show that takes place at the end of each semester, featuring student dancers and choreographers of all experience levels and all kinds of dance styles. No auditions, no exclusion. This is your chance to be seen or have your work seen on the LPAC mainstage, no matter what your dance background might be!

At Swarthmore this semester, a not-for-credit course will be offered on the Ten Commandments in Jewish philosophy, ethics, and law. The course will be taught by Rabbi Eli Gurevitz, with guest lectures from Professors in the area

It will be an eight-week course about an hour and a half-two hours long on Wednesday nights. (Night subject to change based on availability of those taking the class) Every week will consist of a discussion of one of the Ten Commandments and how it relates to our lives today.

There are no prerequisites.

Successful completion of the course will award you with a $200 stipend for investing your time in the program. The program is sponsored by the Sinai Scholars Society because they believe that Swarthmore students posses some
very particular yet essential leadership qualities. An application will be
sent out to any interested students and will be processed by outside
observers. The application will be short and easy.

The class will be capped at 10 students so declare your interest ASAP by emailing Asher Sered at asered1.
