1. Announcement: Hay-Urban and Jesse Holmes Prizes in Religion

ANNOUNCING….
THE HAY-URBAN PRIZE FOR A SUMMER INTERNSHIP, STUDY, OR RESEARCH IN RELIGION

With a generous gift from Stephen Hay ‘51 and funds given in honor of P. Linwood Urban’s retirement from the College in 1989, the Department of Religion will again offer the Hay-Urban prize of $1,000 to assist in supporting at least one student internship, summer study, or research in the area of religion studies.

Your application should consist of a two-page narrative description of your project and its relationship to your studies at the College, a one-page budget proposal, a recommendation letter on your behalf, and a transcript.

Students interested in applying can direct questions to the Chair, Steven P. Hopkins

Applications must be submitted by Monday, April 21, 2008. Note: required application forms are available in the Department office, Pearson 211.

THE JESSE H. HOLMES PRIZE IN RELIGION

The Jesse H. Holmes Prize in Religion of $l50, a gift of the late Eleanor S. Clarke of the Class of 1918 and named in honor of Jesse Holmes, Professor of History of Religion and Philosophy at Swarthmore College from 1899 to 1934, is awarded annually to the student who submits the best essay in a competition judged by the Department of Religion. All Swarthmore College students are eligible to compete, and the essays may be on any topic in the field of religion.

The deadline for submission of papers this year is Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Papers must be typewritten, double-spaced, and should be very carefully proofread. Students may wish to consult a Department paper, “Guidelines for Papers and Term Essays,” available in the Department office, Pearson 211. Papers should normally be between 15 and 30 pages of text. Papers are to be submitted to the Department office. The author should not include his/her name on the paper but should sign it with a pseudonym. The author’s name and pseudonym should be put in a sealed envelope submitted with the paper.

Juniors who are going abroad in the spring and are interested in being an Admissions Fellow as a senior can email Justin Holmes at jholmes1 for an application. The position is paid and mainly entails interviewing prospective students. It’s a lot of fun and is a way for you to help build the next class of Swatties! Completed applications should be returned to the Admissions Office by 4:30 pm on Friday, November 13th. If you have any questions, please contact Justin Holmes at jholmes1.

2. Economic Experiment Participant

Interested in earning some extra money and learning about human decision making?! Sign up for economic experiments at:

After you sign up, we'll invite you to participate in experiments. These will occur in the convenience of Trotter, and there's no commitment just from signing up, but you can't participate unless you have. Experiments are approved by the IRB and your confidentiality is protected.

This position requires access to a car.

Perform the weekly shopping for Paces cafe. Regular access to car required.

5. Van Driver

Hours: 2-4 PM

When: Oct. 24th

Where: Swat

Swarthmore Squash is looking for someone VAN CERTIFIED to drive a fan van to the Springfield Healthplex (just past the mall) on Saturday, Oct. 24th from about 2PM-4PM.

It's a 5 min drive (with lights) and you are just dropping people off and bringing them back to campus. It is probably no more than 3 trips. There is a flat rate of $20.
