2. Swarthmore's Northern Ireland Semester
SWARTHMORE‘S NORTHERN IRELAND PROGRAM
INFO MEETING ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH
AT NOON IN THE SNACK BAR ALCOVE, ESSIE MAE‘S (TARBLE)
Swarthmore sponsors a unique program in N. Ireland, which focuses on the on going peace and reconciliation process, and is based in the small city of Derry. The center piece of the semester, for participating students, is an internship placement with a local to Derry community group which is deeply involved in the peace and reconciliation process. Students thereby have the opportunity at once to be involved in a full fledged basis in this work and to do research on the peace process. Students as well are enrolled as full time visiting students at the University of Ulster(UU) (Magee Campus in Derry), and do work there which directly supports and advanced the internship project. Students reside in UU housing for visiting students.
Dr. Denise Crossan, Field Director of the program, will be visiting Swarthmore this coming week. Students interested in the program – for next semester, or any subsequent semester – are strongly encouraged to meet with Denise to get a feel for the program and, especially, to learn how the program, especially through its internship component, can respond to their particular interests.
To meet with Denise, any or all of the following…..
1) Be in touch with Rosa Bernard(rbernar1, 7826)to schedule an individual appointment.
2) Attend the Wed 3:00 P.M. video presentation(Lang Center): please contact Rosa Bernard to find out about this), with Denise and with Swarthmore students Reina Chano and Maurice weeks who completed the program last Spring with superb success.
3) Attend the Tuesday Info Session in Essie Mae’s at noon.
And…...
To access the program’s web site http://www.swarthmore.edu/Admin/ofs/index.html
Expressions of interest, and questions, may – now and/or later – be directed to Steve Piker, Foreign Study Advisor(spiker1, 8451, 8111, Pearson 1134 and Kohlberg 244)

3. What does the Bible Really Say???
Have you ever noticed how radically different the Hebrew Bible seems in different translations? If you want to understand the enigma of this text…if you want to experience it through your own eyes… if you want to plumb its depths, appreciate its beauty, and confront its challenges… you must read it as it has come down to us from ancient times, that is, in Hebrew. When you can strip away the layers of interpretation to bare its inner soul, then you can begin to understand its role in the great religious and cultural traditions that whirl around it.
Hebrew for Text Study I (Relg 57/Ling 7) will be offered in Spring 2009. This course is normally offered only in the fall, so you have an unusual opportunity to get started learning Hebrew now. M-W-F 9:30–10:20, in the
Beit Midrash.
Contact Helen Plotkin with any questions, or if you already have some Hebrew background and wonder which level is right for you.

10. Senior Linguistics help needed
Hi, my name is Rio and I’m asking for your help.
I’m a senior writing a Linguistics thesis on the way foreign accents are detected. I have made a game on Facebook that helps me obtain data while making it fun for you and your friends to compete: it’s called the FAST Game, for Foreign Accented Speech Transcription, and I was wondering if you would help me by playing.
The game is up at:
http://apps.facebook.com/fastgame/
Please send this along to your friends, colleagues, mentors, and everyone you know. The more people that play, the better!
For issues with regards to privacy, or more on what the game is about, please see
http://www.rioleo.org/dev/fast/help.php
or feel free to ask me via email.
Sincerely,
Rio Akasaka ‘09
