Swarthmore SDS is planning a trip to attend the annual School of Americas protest in Fort Bennings, GA and is seeking other Swarthmore students interested in going. The group will be leaving on Friday 21st of November and returning on Sunday 23rd of November. We have 25 spots to fill and they will go on a first come first serve basis.

The School of Americas [SOA] is a US military base that trains Latin American soldiers and policemen. The school’s graduates have been responsible for torturing, raping, and massacring hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans since the schools founding in 1946.

There is a mandatory non-violent direct action training on taking place during the afternoon of November 16th for people who intend on going.

First-time SOA protesters are strongly encouraged!

Audition for the Theater Department’s Spring Honors Directing Thesis Projects! Jackie Avitabile ‘09 will direct Romeo & Juliet and Jackie Vitale ‘09 will direct Macbeth. Rehearsals begin in January, and those who have taken Acting I are eligible to receive 1 academic credit for their work on the show.

As many of you may know, whether through personal stories or articles in the Phoenix and the Gazette, Swarthmore’s current financial aid policies are adversely affecting Swarthmore students’ abilities to continue an affordable education at Swarthmore.

In lieu of this, a collective of students under the banner of Swarthmore Financial Justice have published a document titled “Reconsidering Financial Aid: Detrimental Effects of our current Financial Aid System.” It is available online at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/swarthmorefinaid/index.html.

The document is not intended to be aggressive or accusatory in any way, nor does it offer comprehensive or directive solutions as how to solve these financial aid problems. Rather, it is a formal, unified acknowledgment that there are systemic problems at work within our current policy, and students are consequently suffering.

Spread the word to your groups, your friends—even your family. As the directions at the bottom of the statement explain, “upon signing the document, please indicate in the comment section whether you are a student, student leader, family member, faculty member, ally, etc.”

To Pallabi Chakravorty, Assistant Professor of Dance at Swarthmore, this talk is a personal journey of discovering the deep roots of India’s composite culture through the vehicle of “Kathak dance”. This interest developed from an appreciation of Indian artistic traditions to intellectual debates on culture, history, nation, and gender. She learned to understand the intricate and often hidden relationships between aesthetics and politics, culture and power, feeling and thought.

Every year, Swarthmore Students Supporting Life hosts dinner discussion about euthanasia, capital punishment, and abortion. This week’s topic is about euthanasia practices throughout the world. If you’re interested in sharing your beliefs about euthanasia (over some pizza and snacks), come to Parrish Parlors between 6 and 7 this wednesday! Free pizza will be available for consumption. Since when have all Muslims and Arabs become terrorists? Why has Arab become a dirty word? What’s this nonsense that all Muslims are Arabs and all Arabs are Muslims?

Stereotypes and misconceptions about people Arabs and Muslims abound in the United States, today. It is past time to begin to educate people and to raise awareness about this prejudice, this bigotry, particularly in light of recent campaigning and voter attitudes. The Middle Eastern Cultural Society is making a movie within the next few weeks to shed light on this issue.

For the last two semesters, Free Culture in collaboration with Olde Club has released free of charge a compilation CD of student performances at Olde Club.

Well, another compilation CD is coming, and will feature student performances from the Fall 2008 semester. The CD should be released shortly after the start of the Spring semester.

Now is the time to sign up for 5 on 5 Intramural Basketball. Games will be played Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. If you are also playing IM Soccer, there shouldn’t be too much of a conflict.

The teams can be all male, all female or co-ed. All teams will play in the same league. This league will be completed before exams in December. We will have a new league that will begin in January after the winter break.

Training for Change is coming to Swarthmore to run a series of workshops entitled Creating Community: Tools for Collective Empowerment.
