1. Diya Wek Event Schedule

MONDAY, OCTOBER 27
7–9PM – Movie Screening: “Fire” – Kohlberg 228
The first of Deepa Mehta’s ‘Elements’ trilogy, ‘Fire’ was extremely controversial in India as the first Indian film to show homosexual relations.
[Co-hosted by SQU]

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28
5–6:30 PM – Speaker: Pallabi Chakravorty – Kohlberg 115
To Pallabi Chakravorty, Assistant Professor of Dance at Swarthmore, this talk is a personal journey of discovering the deep roots of India’s composite culture through the vehicle of “Kathak dance”. This interest developed from an appreciation of Indian artistic traditions to intellectual debates on culture, history, nation, and gender. She learned to understand the intricate and often hidden relationships between aesthetics and politics, culture and power, feeling and thought.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29
4:30–6PM – Outside Speaker: Saira Rao – Sci 199
Saira Rao is author of Chambermaid: A Novel, a witty, entertaining novel about a young attorney’s eventful year clerking with a Federal judge. She will discuss her decision to write the story, as well as the writing process and reactions to her work, and will touch on important issues in a South Asian American experience.
[Co-hosted by SAO]

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30
4:30–6PM – Student Panel -“What it means to be South Asian” – Kohlberg 115
Youv’e undoubtedly heard the term “South Asian” or “South Asian American” during your time at Swarthmore; is this term ethnic, racial, geographic, or something different? Expose yourself to and participate in a discussion of South Asians that is both academic and personal, as students from the class “South Asians in Asian America” discuss issues that are relevant to their experiences.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31
1–2PM – Cricket – Parrish Beach
Join in on a quick pick-up game of cricket on Parrish beach. Never played before? No problem! Learn why cricket is so popular in England, Australia, South Africa and South Asia.
6–10PM – Dinner and Garba – Upper Tarble
Tired of Sharples? Have a free, catered dinner of delicious South Asian cuisine at 6:00. Then, at 7:30, join in on a lively Indian dance called a ‘garba’.

7. Arab, Muslims, Terrorist, it's all the same...

Since when have all Muslims and Arabs become terrorists? Why has Arab become a dirty word? What’s this nonsense that all Muslims are Arabs and all Arabs are Muslims?

Stereotypes and misconceptions about people Arabs and Muslims abound in the United States, today. It is past time to begin to educate people and to raise awareness about this prejudice, this bigotry, particularly in light of recent campaigning and voter attitudes. The Middle Eastern Cultural Society is making a movie within the next few weeks to shed light on this issue.

For the last two semesters, Free Culture in collaboration with Olde Club has released free of charge a compilation CD of student performances at Olde Club.

Well, another compilation CD is coming, and will feature student performances from the Fall 2008 semester. The CD should be released shortly after the start of the Spring semester.

If you would like last semester’s CD (we have a few left), contact rkolodg1 or bmazer1.

If you would like the upcoming CD, please email bmazer1. We’ll try to print enough to match the number of requests.

Lastly, the cover art has been designed by students previously, and we’re now taking submissions for the upcoming CD’s cover. If you’ve got a design for the CD, email bmazer1. Naturally, the design should somehow be Olde Club-related.
