The Daily Gazette is always looking for reporters, photographers, graphical artists, and columnists for the 2008–2009 school year. Just skim this page for the sections you are interested in, and feel free to contact us for more information.

The Daily Gazette is one of the top five online college news sites in the nation. We have 6,000 readers every week (The Phoenix prints roughly 1,800 issues weekly) and we mail out to 2,500 people every morning.

The Gazette has more than 2,000 comments (we now get around 100 comments every week). Each semester, we publish more than 250 stories. We run popular features like the Screw date finder, the Zagette Dining Guide, the Swarthmore Jobs Listings, and the Reserved Students Digest.

And we’d like you to join us.

Columnists | Reporters | Photographers

Columnists

The Gazette is always looking to run more columns. If you are interested in applying to have a column, just email us with the subject of your column, the publication schedule, a list of potential subjects, and at least one example column.

If you are interested in writing as an alum or from a trip abroad, we have slightly different expectations. In these situations, we understand that you wouldn’t be able to submit an example column, so instead please submit an example of writing that could help reflect the quality/voice of your columns.

We do not have a strict publication cycle. However, a regular schedule is important. If you commit to once-a-week or once-a-month publication, we’ll want to hold you to it.

The Gazette is particularly interested in columns focusing on major issues at the College itself.

Reporters

The Gazette is looking for writers of any stripe. We cover art exhibits, lectures, hard news, investigative reporting, and even some light-hearted stories.

There are no hard guidelines for reporters—some write twice a week, and some write once a month. In general, we expect all reporters to: attend our weekly meetings, write ~10 stories, and attend any training events run by the Gazette. We are particularly looking for students interested in taking on beats, like covering Student Council meetings, SBC meetings, creating a round-up of news from clubs, and compiling a police blotter.

To join the Gazette, email the Editor-in-Chief ( dailygazette@swarthmore.edu ) and come to our weekly meetings if possible.

While prior experience is not required, it is strongly encouraged. Participation in Swarthmore’s Journalism Workshop is very helpful. Please also note if you have any additional skills (photo editing, knowledge of video or audio editing, web-design experience, etc.) you have and would be willing to use in service to the Gazette. We’d like to know and utilize that knowledge.

Photographers

The Gazette is looking for photographers to take photos from the dozens of events that occur every week. Most photographers take photographs on an irregular basis and submit photos to the Gazette a handful of times every semester. We are always looking for more dedicated photographers to work closely with our Photography Editor to help build up our archive and accompany more stories.

Photographers are paid $100 / semester. And their job duties include: Attending meetings, taking 12 Photos / Week or Photos from 3–4 Events.

Each semester, the Gazette has two slots for particularly dedicated photographers who are ready to commit to taking photographs. This position is less flexible than the staff reporters—you may be assigned to specific events. The pay for this position is $100 / semester. These reporters will also be trained in the use of Photoshop, as well as video or audio editing if there is interest. The staff photographer would be expected to average 12 photographs published per week or photographs from 3–4 events, with subjects ranging for theatre to lecture head-shots and pictures-of-the-day.

To apply for this position, please email us with your name, class year, photography experience, 5–10 example photographs, and mention any journalism experience or particularly strong knowledge in Photoshop, or other design tools.

Please note that salaries are based on expected income. If the Gazette makes significantly more (or less) money in a semester, they may be subject to change. All salaries are paid via SBC at the normal hourly rate--due to the limitations of the pay tiers, pay may vary by up to $1.50.
