A Word from the Gazette ...
Student Council meeting started with representatives of the WRC and SCCS describing their groups’ upcoming plans and goals for this academic year.
Representing the Women’s Resource Center, Sarah Ifft ’09 discussed the WRC’s objective this year to “reinvent itself…to become a resource center for all the women on campus.” WRC’s goals this year include creating a safer, more secure campus for women, building stronger relationships with IC groups, and ultimately, as Ifft explains, “to create a space where all women can feel comfortable.”
On behalf of the SCCS, Dougal Sutherland ’11 and Miles Skorpen ’09 described the group’s involvement in campus and its hopes for making the SCCS room more accessible. The issues concerning the locking of the SCCS room and the need to repair several gaming consoles were discussed.
New Student Budget Council Policy
Student Budget Council manager, Fletcher Coleman ’09, described the new receipt policy for student groups at Swarthmore. The previous policy for reimbursement for funds required student groups to turn in their receipts within first two weeks to get full reimbursement. After those two weeks, student groups that fail to turn them in will have to process an appeal to get reimbursed, a situation that may turn out to be a hassle.
The SBC’s proposed change to this receipt policy is to maintain the two week policy; however, for the third week, groups will get only 75% of their purchases reimbursed and for the fourth, 50%. Coleman described this as a “good idea because there is a set process and there are not as many questionable issues and situations.”
After asking several questions about the details of the process and the new policy’s impacts, Student Council members passed this new proposal with an unaminous vote.
Daily Gazette’s Management of the Reserved Students’ Digest
Recently, Dean Jim Larimore proposed that the Daily Gazette staff should manage the Reserved Students’ Digest.
As co-editor-in-chief of the Daily Gazette, Miles Skorpen ’09 discussed this new possibility and its implications for the future of the Daily Gazette and the RSD. If this incorporation of the RSD were to occur, a separate daily email would be sent out to the student body on recent job postings, school announcements, and upcoming campus events.
Skorpen explainws this new incorporation of the RSD as one that is “easier to use and more convenient.” Ideally, everyone on campus, including students, would be able to submit job postings and announcements on a Daily Gazette-run website. Another advantage of this new proposal is that these postings would be entered in a specific time frame so there will no longer be outdated announcements.
However, before approving this change, student council members were concerned about the logistics of the RSD’s management. To solve these administrative problems, Skorpen recommended the creation of a contract where StuCo and the Gazette would have a joint agreement and approval of the RSD postings.
Student Council will officially approve of Daily Gazette’s management of RSD after October break when an new layout design for the website is unveiled.
