Food Not Bombs – Responding to the global economic crisis and the increase in hunger.
Video and Presentation with Food Not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry
Food Not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry will speak about the movements response to the global economic crisis and the increase in hunger. Food Not Bombs is a global movement sharing vegetarian food with the hungry and working for peace and social justice. Keith has visited Food Not Bombs groups in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia and the Middle East and will share his experiences of cooking and feeding the hungry. all over the world. Food Not Bombs volunteers at the March gathering in Nashville reported that the crisis in hunger was already growing and agreed to start emergency efforts like gardening, providing meals more days a week and organizing actions to respond to a variety of crisis. Food prices increase by 70 % in April forcing 800 million more people to go hungry. Then this summer the FBI raided several of our cook houses and volunteers were sentenced to long prison sentences. Food Not Bombs is growing with new groups starting from Iceland to Russia and Chile all busy dealing with the global economic crash. Keith will show a dvd about his work in Africa and talk about how to start a Food Not Bombs group.
Keith helped start Food Not Bombs in 1980, designed the logo, co-authored “Food Not Bombs, How to Feed the Hungry and Build Community” and spent nearly two years in jail for sharing vegetarian meals with the hungry in San Francisco. Amnesty International declared him a “Prisoner of Conscience” when he faced life in prison for his work. He has helped provide meals at peace rallies, anti-globalization actions, Cindy Sheehan’s Camp Casey in Crawford, Texas and coordinated the national hunger relief effort for the survivors of Katrina. Keith also co-founded Indymedia, Homes Not Jails, The Taos Peace House, and San Francisco Liberation Radio. He has collected food, cooked and shared meals to the hungry all over Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America and Australia. As one of the collective members that maintains www.foodnotbombs.net and helps people start groups and coordinates campaigns, he has a unique perspective about all the amazing things the Food Not Bombs movement is doing around the world.
