To those of you who are new to the Swarthmore community, welcome! And to those of us who have followed us before, welcome back. We’re The Daily Gazette, Swarthmore’s online daily newspaper, publishing weekdays whenever classes are in session. Our staff has covered a wide range of topics, reporting on college policy changes, art shows in Philly, and scholarship-winning students and writing columns on sex, self-care, and Sharples. We also accept contributions and open letters from faculty, staff, and student groups, who have published many pieces concerning divestment from fossil fuels, our break from Hillel International, and remembrance of the “Spring of Our Discontent.”
2016 will mark The Daily Gazette’s 20th year in business. Since its inception, The Gazette has been on the cutting edge, harnessing the power of the (then new-ish) internet to disseminate news quickly and efficiently around campus. This year, we’re looking to push our paper even further into the future by expanding our multimedia and video departments, bringing you even more videos and adding an extra dimension to our stories.
We’re also using technology to further facilitate communication on our site. Our newly revamped comment section is now supported by Disqus. We love creating a platform for conversations around campus issues, and we can’t wait to hear all of your voices. We aim to be not just a source of information, but also a space for members of the community to engage with each other online.
Lastly, check out our first-year issue coming out tomorrow, featuring Keton Kakkar, Ava Shafiei, Irene Tang, and Celine Anderson!
Here’s to another year of debate and discussion, conversation and community. We can’t wait to get started.
