StuCo Platforms: Co-President – Nicko Burnett ’14

Hi Swarthmore!  My name is Nicko Burnett and I would love to be your representative as one of the Co-Presidents of Student Council for my senior year.  I am a member of the baseball team, Delta Upsilon Fraternity, and will be an RA next year (I am also the kid who got stabbed while studying abroad in Rome but you probably didn’t read those emails).

I am all about enhancing the already tight knit community that is Swarthmore College.  We all know the place we love so much has faced some trials over the last year.  I seek to do everything in my power to not only minimize these trials, but also foster a more united community, a community with members who truly care about each other and are kind to one another.  I want to see a Swarthmore where students say hello when they pass each other on the way to class.  Campus wide events are a great way brings students together who do not usually speak to one another.  While the collective mood at the campus wide discussion with President Chopp and Dean Braun from a few weeks ago was not necessarily upbeat, I still felt closer to the rest of the campus than I have been in quite a while.  I would love to have more events which promote the comingling of different groups on campus.  I truly love Swarthmore and I hope you will allow me to put my ideas to work by electing me as your Student Council Co-President.

Sincerely,

Nicko Burnett

Do you have any? The current Co-Presidents would be able to tell you that it takes more than ideas to have the top-spot in StuCo. You need to know how things work before you can run things. If you want to be President of the US, you need to be in some lower office first. It’s just the way it works. In fact StuCo is currently working on an amendment that nobody will be allowed to run for Stu-Co Pres. without having first been on the council.

Where is the rest of your comment? I don’t think you can convince me to enforce length requirements in just two sentences.

Is “minimizing” really the appropriate response to the various challenges, discussions, and referenda over Greek life and sexual assault that the school has faced this year? Maybe you could say a bit more about what you mean there.
