Men’s Golf Takes Fifth, Men’s Tennis Sweeps Muhlenberg

Monday, April 8, saw two spring teams in action: Men’s Golf and Men’s Tennis. While Men’s Golf competed in the Hershey Cup Invitational in Hershey, PA, Men’s Tennis traveled to Muhlenberg to face the Mules in a Centennial Conference matchup.

Golf

Andy Park ’15 finished first overall in the Hershey Cup Individual Title, after shooting a one-under 70 in the second and final round. Park had earlier positioned himself in the running for the title, after he fired a four-over 75 to tie for first place at the end of the first round on Sunday. Sam White ’14, Jeff Wall ’14, Price Ferchill ’14, and Kyle Knapp ’14 shot 74, 81, 79 and 81 respectively as the Garnet finished in fifth place overall with a total of 626, 22 strokes behind the winners, St. John Fisher.

The Garnet head to Glenmaura Club this weekend to participate in the Glenmaura Club Invitational. First round of competition is slated to begin on April 14.

Tennis

Strong showings in both singles and doubles enabled the Swarthmore’s Men’s Tennis team (6-6, 2-1) to complete a 9-0 sweep of Muhlenberg. Max Sacks ’15, Irving Stone ’15, Max Kaye ’14, and Malik Mubeen ’13 were all double winners for the Garnet today. Sacks held off Daniel Lakhman in a hotly contested No. 1 singles match, eventually winning 10-8 in the super tie-breaker. Stone, Kaye and Mubeen had relatively easier times at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles respectively, but Preston Poon ’14 had to fend off a rally by Max Blumenthal at No. 2 singles before he too prevailed 10-7 in the super tie-breaker. James Wieler ’13 completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles.

In doubles, Sacks and Kaye pulled out an 8-6 victory in the No 1. doubles match-up, Daniel Park ’13 and Wieler cruised through an 8-2 victory at No 2. doubles, and Stone and Mubeen paired together to win the No. 3 doubles rubber 8-3.

The Garnet will head to McDaniel this afternoon to play their second out of five Centennial Conference games in a row. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
