Yesterday afternoon, the Swarthmore softball team split the double-header against reigning Centennial Conference champion McDaniel, stealing the first game 7-0 before dropping the second 14-2. With one more win and loss, the team’s record now stands at 12-8, 1-4.
The Garnet jumped ahead early in the first inning, with the first run of the game coming from Kate Smayda ’13 off a ground out by Nicole Aaron ’14. A two-out homer by Danielle Seltzer ’13 bumped their lead to 3-0 in the third inning, and two more runs expanded the lead to 5-0 by the bottom of the fourth. The fifth inning saw the final two runs of the game, coming from two stolen bases from Rose Pitkin ’14 and Aaron, and a double from Suness Jones ’16.
Notable players: Danielle Seltzer ’13 tallied her third home run of the season in the third. Melissa O’Connor ’14 pitched seven scoreless innings for six total strikeouts. Kate Smayda ’13 finished the afternoon four-of-seven, with two RBI’s.
The Garnet look next to take on Widener in a double-header on Thursday. Play is slated to begin at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
With a well-earned 9-7 victory against No. 21/25 Haverford yesterday afternoon, the Swarthmore baseball team boosted their record to 15-6, 3-0. With this win, their win streak continues to grow to seven games.
It was a close game from the first inning, as the Fords picked up the early lead. The Garnet quickly answered in the second inning with an RBI from Trevor Shepherd ’15 before the Fords responded with three more runs in the third inning. In the fifth, they found their stride, scoring six runs to pull ahead 7-4 by the end of the inning. Despite a late rally by their opponent in the eighth inning, the Garnet managed to keep the Fords at bay, limiting them to seven runs to cap the game.
Notable players: Trevor Shepherd ’15 finished the afternoon with two hits and three RBI’s. Cody Ruben ’14 and Tim Kwilos ’13 each tallied three hits.
A rematch against the Fords will take place at Haverford this Friday. Play is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
