Swarthmore Women’s Soccer Game Preview
Garnet vs. Widener Pride (Wednesday, September 5, 7PM)
Game Preview: After splitting a pair of 1-0 decisions in the season-opening Swat Kick Classic, with a loss to Misericordia and a victory over Wellesley, the Garnet returns to play on Wednesday hosting the Widener Pride. Wednesday’s match-up marks the start of the 320 Challenge as the Garnet and Pride compete head to head in each sport the schools have in common. Swarthmore won the Challenge in 2011-12 after dropping the first two years of the series. The Garnet was ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic region in the first National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll released on Tuesday. Swarthmore is ranked fourth in the region among Centennial schools behind Johns Hopkins (1st), Haverford (4th) and Gettysburg (5th).
Swarthmore’s Last Match: The Garnet earned its first victory of 2012 with a 1-0 shutout over Wellesley in a steady rain on Sunday as Tazmin Bailiff-Curtis ’16 found Amanda Bosworth ’16 on a corner-kick midway through the second half for the game-winner. Classmate Reba Magier ’16 earned the shutout in the Garnet goal as the defense held Wellesley to just three shots on goal.
Widener’s Last Match: The Pride will open their 2012 season on Wednesday. Widener was scheduled to visit Rowan last Friday before the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The team finished 7-6-3 in 2011 and was picked to finish eighth of 10 in the preseason Commonwealth Conference coaches poll.
Last Contest vs. Widener: In a torrential downpour in Chester, Swarthmore picked up its first win of 2011 against the Pride. Amber Famiglietti ’14 scored on a top-shelf strike from outside the box to open the scoring just under 22 minutes into the game and Emma Sindelar ’15 and Amy DiPierro ’15 each added their first career goals in the second half to seal the victory. The Garnet overwhelmed Widener with a 25-2 shot advantage and goalkeeper Marie Mutryn ’12 earned the shutout without making a single save.
