Phyllis Wise ’67 to be Next UI Chancellor

Phyllis Wise ’67 was selected early this month as the new Chancellor and Vice President of the University of Illinois’ Urbana-Champaign campus, pending the approval of the University’s Board of Trustees.

Wise is just off a spell as the interim President at the University of Washington, a position that made her “the first Asian American woman to lead a major American research university,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

In a statement published in the Tribune, UI President Michael Hogan said, “[Dr. Wise] is a proven scholar, with a deep commitment to public higher education, and has an exceptional reputation as a leader at some of the nation’s top universities. I couldn’t be more pleased to have her joining our distinguished leadership team.”

In 2008, Wise received an honorary doctorate from Swarthmore.
