Haverford President Resigns Post to Return to Lab

By
August 23, 2011

Mid-July, Haverford announced that President of the College, Steve Emerson ’74, would not seek reappointment. Emerson had been President of Haverford for four years, and ended his term in late summer, when Joanne Creighton – Haverford’s first female president – was named Interim.

During Emerson’s term, Haverford implemented an academic blueprint for the future, replaced student loans with outright grants, broke ground on two new student dorms, and increased fundraising revenues by 20% since his arrival in office in 2007. Emerson is a graduate of Haverford, and will take the title of Professor of Biology. He has begun his return to what Board Co-Vice Chairman Howard Lutnick ‘83 called “a remarkable career as a physician and stem cell biologist” with a yearlong research sabbatical.

Interim President Creighton comes to Haverford from Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts, where she served as President from 2006-2010. She has served as Interim President at Wesleyan, and leaves a career as a scholar of American Literature.
