Men’s Basketball
The Swarthmore men’s basketball team (4-13, 3-7 CC) stunned Gettysburg (9-7, 7-3 CC) at home on Saturday 58-51.

The Garnet were led by Freshman Will Gates’ 21 points and 11 rebounds. His second career double-double was highlighted by a crucial three-pointer with 1:16 left on the clock, giving Swarthmore a 52-46 lead. They protected and extended this margin by going 6 of 8 from the free throw line down the stretch to ice the game.

The win leveled the Garnet’s home record at 3-3 this season and sent the defending Centennial Champion Bullets packing with a loss at Tarble Pavilion for the second consecutive season. Freshman Jordan Martinez also put in a strong performance from the Garnet backcourt with 12 points and 6 assists.

Women’s Basketball
The Swarthmore women’s basketball team (7-9, 4-7 CC) let an early lead slip away to No. 24 Gettysburg (14-2, 9-2 CC) in a heartbreaking 60-57 overtime loss.

The Garnet led for 38 of the 40 minutes in regulation, but saw a chance to force a second overtime slip away when Genny Pezzola ’12 (10 points) had her last-second three point attempt blocked.

Juniors Ceylan Bodur (17 points and 10 rebounds) and Kathryn Stockbower (10 points and 17 rebounds) led Swarthmore who had 11 point lead in the second half on their way to outshooting and outrebounding the visiting Bullets.

The Garnet was undone by their season-high 31 turnovers and a 16-6 Gettysburg run to close regulation. Swarthmore senior captain Pam Costello recorded three assists to move into seventh place on the College’s all-time list with 192 and counting.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming
At Ware Pool on Saturday afternoon, both the men’s and women’s swim teams scored victories over visiting Cabrini College. The Garnet men (3-3, 2-1 CC) won 74-55 and the women (3-3, 1-2 CC) won 148-88.

A one-two-three finish in the 100-yard breaststroke sealed the victory for the men’s team as Lance Liu ‘12 stopped the clock at 1:04.17, followed by senior teammates Michael Ahn at 1:05.25 and Danny Friel at 1:06.15.

The 100-yard backstroke saw the Garnet men take the top four spots with Sam Bullard-Sisken ‘12, Roger Chin ’13, Neil Palmer ’12, and Tim Brevart ’12 all reaching the wall before any Cabrini swimmers.

The Garnet women went one-two in six events. In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Stephanie Su ‘11, Anne Miller ’10, Chelsea Brett ’11, and Melinda Neal ’11 touched first with a time of 1:59.43.

The Swarthmore team’s dominant performance was highlighted by swimmers Chelsea Brett ’11, Allison Bishop ’11, Casey Osborn ’10, and Jacqueline Scala ’12 claiming the top four spots in the 200-yard freestyle.
