Weekend Roundup: Arts Abound
A collision of events, including Ride the Tide and Parents Weekend, make for an impressive array of on-campus options. Here’s an outline of a few of the performances and events of note, as well as some suggestions if you want to show off the city to your family.
In addition to the much beloved a cappella performances that woo many an unsuspecting prospective student, there are no less than three concerts this weekend. Tonight’s Wind Ensemble performance starts at 8 in Lang; the program includes Gershwin and Mendelssohn among others. The Orchestra Concert Saturday night at 8, Lang Concert Hall, features Shostakovich and Mozart. The spring Gamelan performance, 3 pm Sunday, has the bonus of being in the amphitheater if the weather is good and featuring several dance and purely instrumental pieces.
“Romeo and Juliet” is being performed in the Frear this weekend (see preview for details) and those who want to see art put to a good cause should stop by the Kitao’s Student Art Show and Sale, where a percentage of the proceeds will be given to the AIDS Care Group of Chester.
If you’re hoping to sneak into the city as well this weekend, you could bring your parents to a number of currently running shows and special exhibits including the Galileo Exhibit at the Franklin Institute, Cezanne at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, “Hamlet” by the Lantern Theater Company, or “A Year with Frog and Toad” by the Arden Theatre Company (nothing wrong with a little regressing!) If you have your parents, you may as well eat-out. Consider Lacroix for a really special evening; Geno’s, Jim’s, or Pat’s for the classic Philly cheesesteak; Morimoto’s for adventurous Japanese and very cool ambiance; or explore the Italian Market and pick up a pastry at Isgro’s.
