Weekend roundup: Screwy Pairs

Screw Your Roommate, in addition to being an excellent opportunity for stumbling around Sharples in a ridiculous costume, is in essence about bringing two people together. In honor of Screw, this Weekend Roundup is highlighting peculiar, intense, and amusing pairings in the arts to be found this weekend.

First off, the Kimmel Center Broadway Series continues to present ‘The Odd Couple,’ a classic in the screwball couple genre where opposites… not attract exactly, but coexist and perhaps even thrive. A thought-provoking pairing is Styles and Sizwe in ‘Sizwe Bansi is Dead,’ a critically acclaimed South African play at St. Stephen’s Theater touching on questions about how humanity is reflected in the law of a society.

For an unexpected combination of ‘metal and wood,’ try the ‘Dolce Suono Chamber Music Concert’ tonight at First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia. Billed ‘metal and wood band redux,’ the program includes Joplin, Vivaldi, Piazzolla and Bernstein.

A study in pairings worth mentioning is the Philadelphia Museum of Arts’ “Cezanne and Beyond.” The show exhibits forty paintings and twenty watercolors by Cezanne and pairs them with the work of later artists who were inspired by Cezanne. Among those exhibited are Matisse, Mandrian, Picasso, and Giacommetti.

Finally, a few notes on on-campus events to consider: the Swarthmore Jazz Combos Concert tonight at 6 in Lang, the Johannes Wieland Dance Performance of ‘newyou’ in LPAC at 8, and Sita Frederick’s one-woman performance piece reflecting on sugar production in the Dominican Republic, “BitterSuite,” at 7 in Upper Tarble. You can also catch “The Tempest” at the Frear, running tonight at 8pm, Saturday at 2 and 8 and Sunday at 2.

Swat Contracts with Security Firm AlliedBarton

At the beginning of this semester, two new security guards began patrolling campus during the 9:00pm to 3:30am shift. These guards are employed by AlliedBarton, a security firm that was contracted by the college to provide additional nighttime security; however, their presence has also led students to examine AlliedBarton’s disputed labor policies.
