Weekend Roundup: Oscars, Opera, and Carnaval

Oscar weekend means you still have two nights to catch up on as many nominated films as possible, whether at Marple, the Ritz, or via Netflix. Sunday night you can check out who wins in Tarble at 7 (as well as what the winners are wearing). Also worth catching on campus this weekend is the Cavani String Quartet in Lang tonight at 8pm. The Cooper Event will include a Philadelphia premiere piece, ‘Seasons,’ as well as work by Beethoven.

Off-campus you can see the latest Rennie Harris Puremovement dance performance at the Perelman theater. The hiphop group has focused their choreography to reflect current events and issues including the environment and cultural conflict. Meanwhile, “The Odd Couple” is playing at Innovation Studio.

For those of you who thought that screwing your roommate was hard, consider Princess Turandot, of the opera by the same name, who dodges suitors by setting up three questions that if incorrectly answered leads to beheadings. The beautifully staged Puccini opera is being performed this weekend at the Academy of Music.

Finally for those of you who didn’t notice that carnival and Mardi Gras are approaching, consider visiting the World Café this weekend. Tonight they will be hosting singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards and tomorrow night at 7:30 the ever-popular Alo Brasil.
