In what will be a weekly feature, the Gazette will report on the decisions of the Student Budget Committee. These reports will be posted by Miles Skorpen, a member of the Committee. While some broader issues raised by these reports may be newsworthy, they will not be argued or discussed here due to potential conflicts of interest. The minutes from SBC are posted on the Committee’s website, and these minutes may provide better context for the Committee’s decisions.
The Outsiders Club and Psi Phi presented proposals to SBC at the weekly meeting on 9/21/2008.
Outsiders requested a one-time exemption for van usage rules, as the group wanted to use vans for climbing trips over October break in the Adirondacks and the White Mountain region of New Hampshire. These trips would break the 300-mile round-trip rule, and the prohibition against using SBC vans during official vacations.
The Committee voted to grant the exemptions for the White Mountain trip, and requested more information on the details of the Adirondacks trip, asking the Outsider’s treasurer to return later.
Psi Phi requested $159.92 for six 116-gallon plastic bins to store swords and other equipment for the group’s annual Pterodactyl Hunt. Psi Phi’s treasurer argued that the bins could save $30-40 annually in replacement costs and help make Psi Phi’s group space more accessible. The Committee voted for full funding of the proposal.
On other business, the Committee discussed a study break co-hosted with SAC to help inform students about the two funding bodies, possibly funding an ML weekend shuttle, and discussed possible changes to SAC rules. No votes were taken on these topics.
