From the BiCo: 18, Iraq Teach-In, and a New Master Plan

"18 in '08" Premiers at Haverford

David Burstein '11's documentary, two years in the making, made its Haverford premier last weekend. The film, "18 in '08," examines the lack of voter turnout amongst younger Americans. Burstein took a year off from school to make the film.

Iraq Teach-In

Students Towards a New Democracy, Haverford's counterpart to the Students for a Democratic Society, held a week-long teach-in about the Iraq War. Events included a round-table discussion, a lecture on Iraqi music, and two dinners featuring Iraqi cuisine.

To start the discussion, STAND member Allyn Gaestel ’09 asked, “How do we stay connected to something that we aren’t associated with?”

Over the course of the hour discussion, BiCo students debated Iraq's history, ethnic divides, American conceptions of the country, and even music. It left some students disheartened: “I feel totally overwhelmed by everything I’m up against in my activism and I feel overpowered,” Annie Tague ’10 said.

Haverford to Create New Master Plan

For the first time in 16 years, Haverford will be creating a comprehensive Master Plan, or plan for facilities development over the next 10-15 years. The Plan will help create short and long-term priorities for Haverford's physical landscape. You can see the outlines of a Master Plan for Swarthmore here.
