Why is the Essie Mae's Grill Turned Off?

Swarthmore is wrapped in mystery, and here at the Gazette we try to peel a few of those mysteries away. Most recently, we learned why Essie Mae's turns off its grill from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the week.

According to Essie Mae’s manager Gusti Ruhri, the main reason is that the grill has to be cleaned each day. Moreover, the Essie Mae’s staff also has to replenish the food that the lunch rush depleted. This entails cleaning out the containers, cutting new meat, and restocking. During this time, customer volume is typically much lower, and with new employees coming to take over the evening shift, things simply have to settle into place.

Don’t get your knickers in a twist, though! Gusti Ruhri was kind enough to introduce the panini press last year so that you can still satisfy your hot-sandwich fix after the grill shuts down in preparation for the evening rush.

We can't make you sandwiches, but we can satisfy your thirst for information--send your questions to dailygazette@swarthmore.edu
