Is a Swatmail update coming?

After the abortive introduction of a new email system (called Horde) in 2004, some are still wondering what happened to plans to adopt a different program to replace the TWIG Swatmail system.

Mark Dumic, associate director of ITS' Networking and Systems, explains that ITS is currently working with Bryn Mawr and Haverford to find a new e-mail service. Various companies have developed e-mail services which might be used, though their efficiency throughout a college campus remains to be seen. Dumic explains, "A lot of complex planning will be required to move e-mail services completely to an outside provider. And so, this won't happen during the coming academic year." However, some changes are definitely on the horizon. By Fall 2006, ITS is hoping to upgrade Swatmail with either IMP or SquirrelMail. ITS also plans to use "an outside service" for virus protection and SPAM blocking.
