Weekend Roundup: French film and experimental music
Hey. The Super Bowl is this weekend. We at Weekend Roundup only found out a few days ago, but we know you can't wait to watch those commercials, er, the game. It is a football game, right? Anyway, if you need something to do on another night, or just want to escape the 99%, or maybe 3%, of Swarthmore students who will be screaming madly at the TV in their respective dorm lounges, here are some tips.
Last week we suggested that you check out the new French film "CachŽ" at the Ritz in Philadelphia. Now we can say with genuine enthusiasm, go. It's a great movie- both a very creepy thriller (albeit one that moves at a slower pace than your average American studio product) and, more interestingly, an allegory for recent French history. Don't let anyone tell you too much about the plot, and hang in there, it's all pretty clear at the end. If you need something somewhat less nightmare/intense conversation-inducing, we suggest, with some trepidation, "A Good Woman," a free adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play, "Lady Windmere's Fan," starring the prolific Scarlett Johansson.
For those into experimental music, Orchestra Underground, an ensemble comprised of members of the American Composers Orchestra, will be presenting a multimedia concert at Penn's Annenberg Center Saturday night. The composers are Randall Woolf, Stephen Mackey, Hiroyo Miura, and Robert Beaser. Soprano Lauran Flanigan and percussionist Daniel Druckman will be featured. They aren't giving away many secrets as to the nature of the visuals, but the picture is cool. Go and be surprised--more info at http://www.pennpresents.org.
