This weekend, the Amos J. Peaslee Debate Society ventured south to compete against a wide array of colleges and universities at a tournament hosted by the University of Virginia. The team of Aviva Aron-Dine ’05 and Jon Bateman of Johns Hopkins University finished as the 3rd team overall, falling in semi-finals to a team composed of debaters from Hopkins and U. Maryland. Emily Tredeau ’06 and Garth Sheldon-Coulson ’07 were 6th team overall, beaten in quarters by the same Hopkins-Maryland team. Aron-Dine was the 8th place individual speaker. Tredeau took the 10th place individual trophy.
In the novice division standings, Trude Raizen ’08 and her teammate from Rutgers were 4th place team. Julie Baker ’08 was 5th place individual novice speaker.
Swarthmore debaters also competed at two tournaments over spring break, performing commendably in both. At Duke University, Julie Baker ’08 and her teammate from Wesleyan finished as 1st place novice team and 5th place team overall. Individually, Baker was also the top novice speaker and 5th place overall speaker. At Temple University, Baker was 5th novice speaker, while Tom Emmons ’08 and Sam Asarnow ’08 finished 5th among novice teams.
